A multi-storey building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday, with emergency teams responding to reports that people may have been trapped beneath the rubble.
The Kenya Red Cross said the building collapsed at about 1:40 p.m. on 9th Street in Eastleigh, a busy residential and commercial district of the Kenyan capital. The organisation said it deployed a response team to the scene following the incident.
Videos shared on social media showed the structure falling suddenly, sending thick clouds of dust across the surrounding area. Large crowds later gathered near the collapsed building as emergency operations continued.

Local media reported possible casualties and said some people may have been trapped under the debris. There were also reports of looting around the site, although authorities had not immediately confirmed the number of people injured or killed.

Reports differed on the building’s height, with some accounts suggesting the unfinished structure may have been as tall as 18 storeys.
Eastleigh is one of Nairobi’s most densely populated commercial and residential districts and is widely known as a major business centre for Kenya’s Somali community.
The collapse comes as Nairobi experiences rapid construction and urban expansion, with high-rise residential and commercial buildings increasingly appearing across the city as Kenya’s population grows.
Emergency responders are expected to continue searching the rubble as authorities work to establish the full scale of the incident and determine what caused the building to collapse.
