Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged to work “24 hours a day” after winning re-election for a fourth term on his 81st birthday.

Lula turned 81 on Tuesday, following his victory in Sunday’s presidential runoff against right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro. He won 51.8 per cent of the vote, while Bolsonaro secured 48.2 per cent.

In a video posted on Instagram, Lula promised to deliver what he described as the best presidential term in Brazil’s history.

“I’m going to deliver the best term any president has ever served in the history of this country,” he said.

“I will dedicate 24 hours a day to making this country into the country everyone dreams of,” he added.

Lula is among the world’s oldest leaders. US President Donald Trump, who turned 80 in June, is only a few months younger.

Despite questions about his age, Lula repeatedly presented himself as physically fit during the campaign. He described himself as “fitter than ever”, jogged at campaign events and shared videos of his gym workouts on social media.

His campaign also changed its social media strategy after he suffered a surprise first-round defeat to Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who is in prison.

Lula bought his first mobile phone and embraced social media, calling himself the “king of the selfie”. After securing victory on Sunday, he thanked Brazil’s “rebellious youth” for supporting his campaign.

Meanwhile, Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT) called on supporters to gather outside the presidential residence in Brasília on Tuesday to celebrate his birthday.
