The human rights group Amnesty International accused authorities in Equatorial Guinea of violently arresting and jailing two foreign nationals previously expelled from the United States under a divisive immigration policy.
Paramilitary police forcibly removed Ahmed Soliman of Egypt and Samson Birhane of Eritrea from their hotel in Malabo, placing bags over their heads and beating them before moving them to an overcrowded cell.
Soliman had previously spoken out about systemic mistreatment by local authorities.
Washington deported both men as part of a scheme to pay third-party countries to accept non-nationals.
Amnesty stated that police detained the pair on trumped-up charges of damaging hotel property in direct retaliation for Soliman’s public comments to the press.
The organisation demanded their immediate release, noting that officers currently hold both men in inhumane conditions without access to legal counsel.
