Everton defeated Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday, piling pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle as Thierno Barry’s second-half goal lifted the visitors to seventh in the Premier League.
The defeat leaves Newcastle in 13th place after another disappointing performance, with midfielder Jacob Ramsey sent off in the closing moments for a reckless challenge on Harrison Armstrong.
Newcastle have now lost four of their last five matches across all competitions and managed just two victories in their previous seven games.
Supporters booed the team at half-time and again at the final whistle, while some left the stadium before the match ended.
Jaissle, appointed in the close season after Eddie Howe’s unexpected departure, is struggling to turn around the club’s fortunes in his first season in charge.
The former Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli manager faces mounting pressure to deliver a result when Newcastle visit fellow strugglers Fulham on Saturday.
The Magpies have also endured a poor record in Monday league fixtures, losing 22 of their last 33 Premier League matches played on the day.
Barry’s goal, his eighth of the season and fourth in his last six games, secured Everton’s second victory over Newcastle in five days. The Toffees had beaten the Magpies 3-1 in the League Cup fourth round on Thursday.
The win also ended Everton’s run of two consecutive league defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea, giving them their first away league victory since February 28, when they last won on a visit to Newcastle.
Everton were again without Jack Grealish, who missed a second consecutive match after being dropped for last week’s Newcastle fixture over a reported breach of club discipline.

The Manchester City loanee, who has faced criticism over his conduct off the pitch throughout his career, was reportedly absent from training before the League Cup encounter. Everton said he was not match fit for Monday’s game, but the visitors managed without him.
Newcastle began brightly, with Harvey Barnes firing narrowly wide before Joelinton sent a long-range effort just off target. However, neither side created many clear opportunities in a scrappy first half.
Everton broke the deadlock four minutes after the restart. Newcastle’s defensive lapse allowed Tyrique George to shoot, and goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made a weak save, pushing the ball into Barry’s path for a close-range finish.
The goal underwent a lengthy VAR review for a possible offside before it was allowed to stand, prompting protests from Newcastle.

Fabian Schar missed a chance to restore parity when he fired wide, while Anthony Elanga came close to equalising with a close-range effort that struck the post and rolled along the goal line before Everton cleared it.
Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal continued, with the team waiting until the 86th minute to register its first shot on target. Yoane Wissa’s effort was comfortably saved by Jordan Pickford, who was forced into a more difficult stop in stoppage time.
Ramsey’s dismissal, after receiving two yellow cards within a minute, capped a frustrating night for Newcastle and further heightened the scrutiny on Jaissle.
