Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili has warned that authorities cannot continue finding women’s bodies across Ekurhuleni as the death toll in the killings rises to nine.

The latest body, belonging to a woman and covered in a sheet, was discovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on Thursday.

The discovery brings to nine the number of bodies found in the East Rand since July.

Four partially clothed women were found dead in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, between July 17 and September 12.

Another body was discovered in Olifantsfontein on Monday, while a decomposing body was found outside a clinic in Kwa-Thema on Tuesday.

A seventh body was later found in a stream in Clayville, Tembisa, near the Mall of Tembisa.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia subsequently announced that another body had been discovered in Olifantsfontein.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has vowed that authorities will fight back against the violence, saying the state would not surrender and had the capacity to respond to those responsible.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza also called on men across the metro to take action against violence against women.

He said no woman should lose her life while men stood by, adding that the municipality would not negotiate with perpetrators and that those convicted should receive harsh sentences.

“No woman should lose her life while men stand and watch.

“Harsh sentences must be handed to these criminals,” he said.

Police have announced a R400,000 reward for information that could assist with the murder investigations.

Mosikili, however, urged communities not to provide information solely for the financial reward, but out of a sense of humanity and responsibility.

She called for relevant information to be provided to police as soon as possible.

Mosikili also said police were working to increase resources to speed up investigations into the killings.
