The Nigerian Government has announced the closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for two weeks. The closure will take effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, to allow emergency rehabilitation and maintenance works on the bridge.
The Nigerian Ministry of Works said the bridge is expected to reopen on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Acting Controller of Works in Anambra, Timothy Emenike, advised motorists to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the closure. He said the First Niger Bridge has deteriorated, particularly its carriageway surface, and that vandalism has damaged some components.
“During his recent working visit to Anambra State, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, expressed serious concern over the condition of the bridge and directed the immediate commencement of emergency maintenance and rehabilitation works,” Emenike said.

The rehabilitation will include removing the damaged asphalt surface and laying about 40mm of new asphalt wearing course. Workers will also carry out other maintenance and safety works, including installing solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television cameras.
The ministry said it would deploy traffic diversion measures, road signs, safety barriers and traffic-control personnel throughout the closure.
Motorists have been advised to reduce speed, avoid reckless overtaking and obey traffic-control officials around diversion and construction zones.
The ministry also urged motorists to allow extra travel time and plan their journeys before setting out. The works will continue day and night to speed up completion and minimise traffic disruption.
The Ministry of Works said the intervention is necessary to restore the bridge to a safer and more efficient condition. It also appealed to motorists, residents, businesses and other affected stakeholders to cooperate with the temporary traffic arrangements.
