Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says the first phase of the Creek Road Market reconstruction in Old Port Harcourt Township will provide about 700 shops for traders and ease traffic congestion.
Fubara also said the project would improve trading conditions and create a cleaner environment in the historic part of Port Harcourt.
The governor spoke during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction, where he expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of work. He said the new market would accommodate traders dealing in wet and dry goods, particularly women currently selling along Creek Road and adjoining streets.

According to him, relocating the traders would free up the roads and allow the government to rehabilitate surrounding streets.
“With 700 shops, it is clear that our women who are trading along the Creek Road will be relocated, and we’ll have freer access along the road,” the governor said.

Fubara described Old Port Harcourt Township as a historic part of the city, noting that it was home to elderly residents and the area’s original inhabitants, whom he referred to as the “Aborigines.”
He stressed the need to restore the area’s cleanliness and dignity, adding that street trading had spread beyond Creek Road to other streets in the township.
“It’s important we tidy up this road so that these traders can evacuate the major road, and the road will be free,” he said.
The governor assured residents that his administration would provide the support needed to ensure the project is completed on time.
He added that the contractor had promised to deliver the first phase of the market by the end of January 2027.
The reconstruction is part of the Fubara administration’s urban renewal efforts to improve commercial activities, ease traffic, and create a cleaner environment in Port Harcourt.
