Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos State, says he will serve residents with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose if elected governor.

His remarks followed the endorsement of his 2027 governorship ambition by the state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu publicly backed Hamzat during a meeting with party leaders at the governor’s office in Alausa on Monday.

The governor reportedly described his deputy as the best person for the role and offered prayers for him, wishing him strength, peace and divine support in future responsibilities.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Hamzat said the endorsement meant a great deal to him.

He said he felt honoured by the support of Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as his governor, brother and friend.

Hamzat added that the confidence reposed in him was deeply appreciated, noting that they had worked closely together in the service of Lagos State.

He said he remained committed to building on the progress achieved under the current administration and looked forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and clear purpose.

“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” he wrote.

“His trust means a great deal to me. We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly.”

“I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose.”

The endorsement comes as growing political speculation over likely contenders for the All Progressives Congress governorship ticket in Lagos ahead of the 2027 election heightens, with Hamzat widely seen as a leading aspirant.

However, former governorship candidate Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, had earlier dismissed suggestions that the party had already settled for a preferred candidate.

In a statement through his spokesperson, Gbenga Ogunleye, Jandor said no formal decision had been taken by the party leadership.

He added, however, that he would support the party’s decision if a consensus candidate is eventually selected.
