Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned Friday that the Democratic Republic of Congo’s worst Ebola outbreak in history is spreading into new regions rather than slowing down.

The medical charity countered recent optimistic statements from global health officials, labelling the current situation alarming as cases surge in areas lacking essential medical infrastructure.

Since May, the 17th Ebola outbreak has killed over 3,600 people out of more than 7,200 recorded cases across the country.

While transmission has slowed in the original epicentre of Ituri province, the virus is now expanding into South-Ubangi near the Central African Republic border and North Kivu, which currently accounts for nearly half of all new infections.

MSF epidemiologists warned that local health facilities lack adequate preparation, staff, and resources to handle the surge.

Containment efforts face severe hurdles because no approved vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain driving this outbreak.
