The Nigeria Catchball Federation (NCF) has withdrawn from a forthcoming tournament in South Africa over safety concerns.
Nnaomi Nnaji, the NCF’s media coordinator, said in a statement that the team withdrew from the tournament over recent xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
Bola Babarinde, NCF president, said the decision to withdraw was made in the best interest of players, officials, and the broader Nigerian contingent scheduled to participate in the tournament. Babarinde added that the well-being and security of NCF members remain the top priority, while expressing disappointment over the development.
“The prevailing tension and uncertainty have inevitably impacted the integrity and feasibility of the competition. In light of these circumstances, the NCF has resolved to withdraw its participation, prioritising the safety and security of its athletes and officials above all else,” said Babarinde.
“The Federation remains committed to the development of Catchball both locally and internationally and hopes for a future where such decisions will not be necessary.”
Violence against African migrants, including Nigerians, in South Africa is recurring. Videos of attacks circulated on social media last week, showing some South Africans wielding sticks as they chased and beat Black migrants, ordering them to leave the country.
The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg said on Monday that two Nigerians were killed during the xenophobic attacks.
Babarinde said that, having spent several years in South Africa and contributed to the growth of sports and community relations, the situation was disheartening. He noted that such acts undermine the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and African brotherhood that international sporting events are meant to promote.
He added that the federation acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in addressing the situation.
