Polls have opened in Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany, where voters are taking part in a regional election that could see the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerge as the clear winner and potentially form its first state government.
Voting began at 8:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) on Sunday, with more than 1.7 million voters eligible to cast ballots for state lawmakers.
Polling stations will close at 6:00 p.m. (1600 GMT).
The election is being closely watched as a key test for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s increasingly unpopular federal coalition.
