Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for vandalising the newly constructed Festac-Alakija Bridge.
Sanwo-Olu condemned the incident on Friday, describing the vandalism of critical components of the bridge as “barbaric and criminal.”
“Lagos will not tolerate any act of vandalism because it is barbaric and criminal,” the governor said.
He said officials from the Lagos State Office of Infrastructure had inspected the bridge following the discovery and confirmed that its structural integrity remained intact.
“I have been informed by officials of the Office of Infrastructure who visited the bridge that the structural integrity of the bridge is intact and remedial work will be executed immediately to protect the columns,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor directed security agencies to go after those responsible for the damage, warning that anyone found culpable would face the law.
“Anyone who is found to be culpable in this horrendous, shameful and condemnable incident will surely face the law,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said the state would not tolerate attacks on infrastructure built with public funds, urging residents to help protect government facilities.
The governor’s directive followed the discovery of vandalism beneath the Festac-Alakija Bridge during an enforcement operation along the Lagos-Badagry corridor.
Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said on Friday that a joint midnight operation involving officers of the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force led to the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums.
According to Wahab, the suspects allegedly removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables and other materials supporting the bridge.
He said the discovery was made during enforcement operations aimed at clearing the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of environmental infractions, illegal motor parks, roadside trading and market displays on highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways.
Wahab described the vandalism as a serious threat to public safety, saying the removal of structural materials could undermine the integrity of the infrastructure.
The suspects are expected to be prosecuted under Lagos State laws.
The Festac-Alakija Bridge forms part of the infrastructure along the Lagos-Badagry corridor, one of the major transport routes connecting Lagos with communities towards the Badagry axis.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the vandalism of public infrastructure and the cost of protecting major government projects from criminal damage.
