The senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Kalu, has said President Bola Tinubu has assigned him to coordinate the activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.

Kalu, who once served as the governor of Abia State and is currently the chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, disclosed the development on Monday, linking the directive to a recent meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He confirmed the task via his official Facebook page, expressing gratitude for the responsibility entrusted to him at a time of shifting political calculations in the South-East. He said, “I sincerely thank His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, for the confidence reposed in me and the marching order to coordinate activities in Abia State in respect of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.”

This development comes as the APC heightens efforts to strengthen its grip in Abia and the wider South-East, where the party has historically struggled against opposition dominance. The shift is also seen as part of a wider strategy to unite party structures, settle internal conflicts and position credible candidates ahead of future contests.

Listing his priorities, Kalu emphasised a focus on party togetherness, stakeholder discussion and electoral readiness in the state.

“As the most senior governor in the state, I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders, in line with the President’s directive, to ensure that the APC in Abia produces candidates who are widely acceptable, united in purpose, and well-positioned to secure victory in the state for the President’s re-election, while advancing the best interests of Abia State and Nigeria at large,” Kalu stated.

However, the Presidency hasn’t released any statement affirming or debunking the former governor’s claim. Kalu’s political experience, as a former governor and ranking senator, is expected to play a key role in mobilising party members and enhancing grassroots mobilisation.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, this move shows the ruling party wants to change its strategy in the South-East and work more closely to win more votes there.
