Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has withdrawn his candidacy for the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The announcement was made in Osogbo, the state’s capital, less than three weeks before the APC primary scheduled for December 13.
Basiru explained that the decision was necessary due to the “enormous responsibilities” of his current position as the party’s National Secretary, following consultations with party leaders, including President Bola Tinubu.

He assured supporters of his political movement, the Alubarika House, that his step-down does not signal a retreat from progressive goals but rather a deeper commitment to working with the APC’s leadership.
He pledged to support emerging political leaders in alignment with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
During the event, which was the inauguration of his movement’s new secretariat, Basiru also committed N50 million as a take-off grant for planned empowerment initiatives.
Following his withdrawal, approximately 13 aspirants remain in the contest for the APC governorship ticket.
