Former Kano State Governor and vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed that he and the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi have an agreement for a single-term presidency arrangement ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking on the political understanding between them on Channels Television on Monday, Kwankwaso said the current situation differs from 2023, arguing that the presidency should move to the South for four years before returning to the North.
“The circumstance of 2023 is completely different from the present circumstance,” Kwankwaso said. “Now we have a president from the southern part of the country who is completing his term, and the circumstance has changed.”
He added that their position was based on the belief that power should rotate between Nigeria’s regions.
“Together we felt that the presidency should go to the South for four years, thereafter it will come back to the North, and we believe that should be the consensus of everybody in this country,” he said.
Kwankwaso also confirmed that Obi had committed to serving only one term if elected in 2027, saying he trusts the former Anambra governor to honour the agreement.
“I personally believe him, and I don’t think based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes,” he said.
According to Kwankwaso, the agreement was documented both within their political structure and between the two leaders, with the understanding that Obi would complete a four-year term before a fresh arrangement is considered in 2031.
“The agreement is what you said, that after four years he will come and work together, team together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers, and involve everybody to work together,” Kwankwaso said.
He, however, noted that future political decisions would depend on the circumstances at the time, adding that their immediate focus was on the 2027 election and a broader long-term plan for the country.
