A deadly raid on a Warrap State military base and a concurrent emergency drought declaration have exposed South Sudan’s growing instability as the nation prepares for its first elections in December.

On Friday, armed assailants killed 16 security personnel and four civilians during an assault on the northeastern base before security forces killed six attackers.

Local authorities report that severe rainfall deficits have devastated crops, grazing lands, and livestock across the region, triggering fears of an imminent and catastrophic famine.
