Troops of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Battalion 7, Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have cleared terrorist positions in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, recovering weapons, ammunition, motorcycles and other items abandoned by the fleeing fighters.
The operation formed part of ongoing military offensives aimed at dismantling terrorist enclaves and restoring security to communities across the North-West.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesman for Sector 2, 8 Division, Olaniyi Osoba, the troops moved through identified threat areas, including Manu, Alkasim and Kandam villages, as well as the Magarya Forest axis.
The troops encountered the terrorists in the Magarya Forest, triggering an exchange of fire. The military said the soldiers used superior firepower to force the terrorists from their positions and into the deeper parts of the forest.
“Upon making contact with the terrorists within the Magarya forest enclave, troops engaged the terrorist elements with superior firepower, forcing them to abandon their positions and flee into the deep forest,” the statement said.
A follow-up search of the area led to the recovery of a PKT machine gun, AK-47 rifles and a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition.
Several motorcycles and assorted logistical and miscellaneous items were also recovered and were believed to have been left behind by the fleeing terrorists.
The military said the recovery of the weapons and motorcycles would further weaken the terrorists’ operational capabilities in the area.
It added that troops had maintained a strong presence across the general area and continued to dominate the axis to prevent the terrorists from regrouping and protect surrounding communities.
