Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi participated in the nationwide presidential primary election of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday.
The internal poll, held across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards ahead of the 2027 general election, adopted the Option A4 open queueing system for accredited members to select their preferred candidate from a three-man shortlist that also includes economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Amaechi cast his ballot at Ward 5 in Ubima, Rivers State, while Atiku voted simultaneously at the Ajiya Ward polling unit in Yola, Adamawa State.

Following the exercise, Atiku described the nationwide voting process as a significant democratic step toward national restoration.
The primary serves as the opposition party’s counterweight to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which concluded its primary a day before, confirming President Bola Tinubu as its official 2027 candidate with over 10.9 million votes.
Despite the high turnout, the exercise took place against a backdrop of deep internal fracturing within the ADC leadership.
On Sunday, a breakaway faction announced the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by former Senate President David Mark, and declared Dumebi Kachikwu as their consensus candidate.
However, the David Mark-led NWC remains the official faction recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), prompting leadership to urge members to ignore the splinter group and maintain order.
