Fenerbahce players Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have been handed UEFA suspensions for their involvement in the disorder that followed their Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.
Fenerbahce advanced to the next stage after a 2-1 second-leg win in France secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph. However, celebrations were overshadowed by a confrontation after the final whistle, with Greenwood and Guendouzi involved in a heated exchange involving players and coaching staff from both teams.
UEFA announced on Friday that Guendouzi, a former Arsenal midfielder, had received a four-match suspension from UEFA club competitions. The governing body said the punishment was for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.”
Two of Guendouzi’s four matches will remain suspended under a one-year probation period, UEFA added.
The French midfielder was also fined €50,000 after being found responsible for several incidents, including making an offensive gesture towards Lyon supporters and contributing to the confrontation that followed the match.
Guendouzi previously played for Lyon’s rivals Marseille, a connection that added tension to the encounter between the two clubs.
Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce after leaving Manchester United, received a one-match suspended ban and a €30,000 fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct,” according to UEFA.
The sanctions mean both players could face further consequences if they commit similar offences during the probation periods.
The disciplinary action comes after a dramatic night in Lyon, where Fenerbahce’s qualification was followed by scenes of hostility rather than a celebration of their European progress.
The Turkish side will now prepare for the next stage of the Champions League campaign, while Greenwood and Guendouzi will remain under UEFA’s disciplinary watch.
