The Labour Party in Sokoto State has nominated Haliru Dikko as its new governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Dikko emerged during the party’s substitution primary in Sokoto on Tuesday, after the previously elected candidate withdrew.

Speaking after the exercise, the state Chairman of the Labour Party, Abubakar Yawale, said the substitution process was conducted with Dikko’s consent and in the presence of relevant officials and stakeholders.

Yawale said all state party executives, Independent National Electoral Commission officials, security agencies, and party supporters were present during the exercise.

”All the state executives were here, INEC officials were here, security agencies were here, and our party supporters across the state were also present.

“This is to tell you that this is legal. We notified all the security agencies. The Commissioner of Police is aware, the Director of Security and the Commandant of the NSCDC are all aware of our activities,” he said

He added that the party’s national headquarters and INEC’s national headquarters were also notified of the exercise.

According to Yawale, Dikko’s absence from the venue did not invalidate the process because he had obtained his consent and signed all necessary documents. The party chairman described Dikko as a grassroots politician with extensive experience in local government administration, saying his background would strengthen his chances in the 2027 contest.

He also urged voters to compare Dikko’s credentials with those of other governorship candidates.

“Among all the gubernatorial candidates in other political parties, there is none better than our candidate. Go and check who he is,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Dikko thanked the party leadership and members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to make the Labour Party a credible alternative in Sokoto State.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and a strong commitment to serve,” he said.

“I pledge to work with our party leadership, candidates, members and the good people of Sokoto State to build a united, peaceful, prosperous and progressive Sokoto.

The substitution primary followed the withdrawal of the party’s previous governorship candidate, who emerged from the earlier primary election held in May 2026.
