A stabbing in New York’s Times Square on Monday left one person dead and another injured, while police shot and killed the female suspect during the incident.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the deaths at a press conference, saying the second victim was receiving treatment in a hospital and remained in stable condition.
The attacker, identified as 49-year-old Queens resident Pamela Cisneros, who was known to have mental health issues, pulled two large knives from a bag bearing the logo of a well-known supermarket chain before threatening passersby in broad daylight, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
She then approached a 68-year-old man and stabbed him in the abdomen. Twenty seconds later, she attacked a 32-year-old woman, also stabbing her in the abdomen, wounds from which she later died.
Police reportedly do not believe the incident was terrorism-related.
An AFP journalist at the scene observed a heavy emergency services presence, while officials examined a bloodstained area in the popular tourist district.
A witness told local broadcaster PIX11 that the woman was holding two knives and was initially subdued with a Taser before allegedly charging at police officers.
The witness said officers then shot her twice.
The New York Police Department described the incident as a “confirmed officer-involved shooting.”
A police spokesperson said the investigation remained active as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
“Right now, it’s still an active and ongoing investigation,” a spokeswoman told AFP.
