President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is sending envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to Moscow and Kyiv with a formal proposal to end the four-year war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed optimism about the mission, describing his son-in-law Kushner and businessman friend Witkoff as exceptional negotiators capable of brokering a deal.
While declining to clarify whether the plan requires Ukraine to cede territory, Trump insisted that his administration has a viable blueprint for peace.
The weekend trip marks the pair’s first visit to Kyiv since Trump resumed office, though both envoys have previously travelled to Moscow for discussions.
Trump attributed the conflict—which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022—to a personal clash between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ahead of the envoys’ arrival, Zelenskyy proposed a reciprocal temporary ceasefire, promising to halt Ukrainian airstrikes during the diplomatic talks if Russia commits to an identical hold on its aerial operations.
During the same briefing, Trump dismissed recent accusations from Germany regarding a Russian attempted drone attack on an airport, asserting that Putin has no desire to attack NATO territory.
U.S. officials hope the upcoming diplomatic mission will establish common ground between the warring nations, though details of the peace framework remain undisclosed.
