Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, with both sides battling for a place in the quarter-finals.

According to information published on FIFA’s website on Sunday, the encounter will take place in Salé, where the Nigerian side will seek to extend its campaign in the competition.

The Flamingos advanced to the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B behind defending champions North Korea.

Mexico also secured second place in Group F to qualify for the Round of 16, setting up a clash between two teams aiming to progress further in the tournament.

The North American side confirmed its qualification with a 1-0 victory over Australia in its final group match on Sunday, courtesy of Citlalli Reyes’ decisive goal.

Mexico will enter Thursday’s encounter with confidence after winning the bronze medal at the 2025 edition of the tournament.

However, Nigeria will be determined to overcome the challenge and secure a place in the last eight as they pursue their ambitions on the global stage.

The Flamingos will need to maintain their attacking threat while remaining defensively disciplined against a Mexican side that has demonstrated its ability to deliver under pressure.

Nigeria began its campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before recovering with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico. The team then recorded an impressive 3-1 win over North Korea to finish the group stage with six points.

The victory over North Korea provided a significant boost for the Nigerian youngsters ahead of the knockout stage, where a single defeat would end their hopes of winning the tournament.

Mexico, meanwhile, will seek to build on its 1-0 win over Australia, secured through Reyes’ goal. Its bronze-medal finish at the 2025 competition also highlights the challenge awaiting the Nigerian side.

With a quarter-final place at stake, head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will be expected to prepare the team for Mexico’s strengths while ensuring the players take advantage of their scoring opportunities.

The Flamingos will hope to reproduce the determination and clinical finishing they displayed against North Korea when the two teams meet on Thursday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3 pm local time at the Women’s Football Complex in Morocco, with the winners advancing to the quarter-finals.
