Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has become the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2027 presidential aspirant after purchasing the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms for the upcoming election.

According to Vanguard, sources within the NDC said Obi was the only aspirant who purchased the form at the close of sales on Monday.

The NDC reportedly closed the sale of expression-of-interest and nomination forms for the presidential ticket after Obi made the purchase, prompting reports that he emerged as the party’s sole presidential aspirant.

The party, however, extended the deadline for the collection of expression of interest forms for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly seats, by one week.

According to the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the earlier deadline of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, was extended to 12 midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Enekweizu said the extension applied only to the sale of State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and governorship tickets.

Screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed the forms will commence on Tuesday, May 19, and end on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, according to the party’s timetable.

The party also disclosed that the collection and return of nomination forms for screened and cleared aspirants will begin on May 20 and end on May 26, 2026.

Obi defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in April 2026, citing internal party crisis and legal tussles.
