Rescue of Oyo Pupils ‘a Big Relief’ – Governor Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has described the release of pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area as “a big relief” for their families and the state, after the victims spent 57 days in captivity.

Makinde said the development had brought joy to all those who had waited for the safe return of the abductees.

“It’s such a big relief for all of us and for those waiting, you know, for this past 57 days. I think it’s a big relief for all of us,” the governor said during a telephone interview with Channels Television on Friday.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for their commitment to securing the victims’ release.

“We’ll use the opportunity to say thank you to our service commanders, the Nigerian Police, the DSS, the military and the high command and, of course, the President, for pushing really hard to have this done.”

The governor said he was overjoyed but would speak more extensively later.

“I think I’m just right now overjoyed and I cannot say much. I will talk much later when I can put my thoughts together,” he added.

Earlier on Friday, Makinde had taken to his verified X handle to express gratitude for the safe return of the abductees.

“Really grateful for the safe return of the children and teachers abducted from Oriire LGA 56 days ago. Our priority now is to ensure they are reunited with their families and support their rehabilitation after this traumatic experience,” he wrote.

He also commended the security agencies involved in the rescue operations and offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

“May the souls of those who paid the ultimate price rest in peace and may God comfort their families,” the governor said.

The children and teachers were abducted on May 15 when gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and two other schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Alawusa communities, killing two teachers.

They were freed on Friday following a coordinated military, police and intelligence operation, with President Tinubu confirming that eight suspects were arrested and several others killed.
