The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Delta State Government of attacking and intimidating its members and supporters.
At a press conference, the state’s chairman, Richmond Oyindoubra, said the party had received reports of attacks on its members, as well as the removal and destruction of its billboards, banners, and other campaign materials.
“We have particularly received reports of the removal and destruction of NDC billboards, banners, and campaign materials, across Delta State and beyond,” Oyindoubra said.
The party chairman also accused the Delta State Government of using its incumbency and government machinery to frustrate opposition political activities ahead of the elections.
“We are gravely concerned by what the Nigerian Democratic Congress regards as a disturbing pattern of intimidation, harassment, obstruction, and the alleged weaponisation of governmental and incumbency machinery against legitimate political competition,” he said.
The allegations come days after former Deputy President of the Senate and NDC Delta Central senatorial candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, claimed there was an assassination attempt on his convoy during a consultation visit.
He said six party members were injured in the incident.
However, the Delta State Government has rejected the allegation, describing it as baseless and politically motivated propaganda.
The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, accused Omo Agege of attempting to create tension and generate public sympathy at the start of his campaign.
“How do you, on the first day of starting your campaign, the first thing you are doing is to begin to look for a way to create tension and then elicit sympathy, and you are saying that somebody wants to eliminate you,” Aniagwu said.
“Eliminate you for what? We will not be distracted by stories that are completely at variance with reality, particularly coming from somebody who is not even on the same ballot with the governor. Neither are we going to descend into that arena,” he added.
