The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been prevented from reaching Yelwata Community in Benue State.
Obi had travelled to the state on Tuesday to sympathise with residents following recent attacks that reportedly killed over 200 people.
Members of his team said his convoy was stopped along Boko Road near the Air Force Base in Makurdi.
They alleged that political thugs and security operatives blocked the convoy after some youths confronted the presidential candidate at Field Community.
The incident briefly disrupted proceedings as tensions rose at the venue.
Obi said he had been waiting for security personnel to allow him to proceed but was prevented from passing.
“In states or places where people have been killed, over 200 people lost their lives. So I decided to come and console them,” Obi said.
He alleged that youths led by a government aide had blocked the road to stop him from reaching the affected community.
“I’ve been standing here for a while now, thinking they will come to their senses. It’s not happening. We can’t have a country like this,” he said.
Obi described the situation as “totally unacceptable”, saying Nigerians should be able to show solidarity with communities affected by violence.
“People want to show solidarity and comfort to them. People want to condone them. People want to show that they are with them,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor said his visit was not secret and that authorities knew about his planned trip.
“Everybody is aware I’m visiting this place today. It’s not a secret,” he said.
Obi called on Nigerians to work together to build a country where citizens can live safely and have opportunities to escape poverty.
“This country belongs to all of us,” he said, warning that the actions of those blocking his visit could eventually have consequences.
He also criticised the security situation in Benue, saying residents needed support, security and opportunities for a better livelihood.
The reported incident comes after recent deadly attacks in Yelwata and other parts of Benue State.
