The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s, convoy during his visit to Benue State on Tuesday.
The party, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Osa Director, said Obi had travelled to the community to sympathise with victims and families affected by the killings and listen to their concerns.
The NDC described the alleged obstruction as troubling and condemnable, saying Obi’s visit was intended to mourn with grieving families and offer solidarity rather than engage in political activities.
Obi was also quoted as saying he had visited Benue to listen to families who lost loved ones and discuss ways to prevent further tragedies.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity during a moment of unimaginable pain,” he said.
The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians deserved to live, travel, and farm without fear, adding that protecting citizens’ lives should remain the government’s primary responsibility.
Although Obi could not access Yelwata, the party said it remained committed to the victims and their families.
“We will not be deterred. The NDC will persist until we restore the fundamental responsibility of government: the protection of every Nigerian’s life,” it said.
The Benue State Government, however, has denied involvement in the alleged obstruction.
Governor Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, described the allegations as unfounded and said the state government neither deployed nor patronised thugs as instruments of governance or security.
Kula also questioned whether Obi had visited Makurdi and said recognised security agencies should handle any security concerns involving a visiting political figure.
The state government urged the public to disregard allegations linking it to the incident.
