The United Kingdom’s regulator for court lawyers has suspended International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan over allegations of sexual misconduct.
The suspension was announced on Friday by the Bar Standards Board, which said the measure takes immediate effect.
In a statement, the Bar Standards Board said a panel will review the case at a hearing scheduled within the next four weeks.
Khan had already been suspended by the ICC’s governing body as investigations into the allegations continued. The claims involve alleged sexual misconduct with a female aide and have been the subject of scrutiny for more than two years.

The ICC prosecutor has denied all allegations and maintains that he has done nothing wrong.
The final decision on whether Khan will remain in office now rests with the Assembly of States Parties, which oversees the ICC. The body is expected to discuss the matter during a special session in July.
Khan’s supporters have argued that he has become a political target following his efforts to seek arrest warrants for Israeli officials over genocide-related allegations linked to the war in Gaza.
However, only the Assembly of States Parties has the authority to remove him from office. Any decision to do so would require a majority vote in a secret ballot among its 125 member states.
At least 63 countries would need to support a motion to remove Khan from his position.
