Manchester United manager Michael Carrick conceded on Friday that his side have “lost their way” following a crushing 4-1 defeat to Champions League debutants Como, extending their winless streak to seven matches.

Appointed permanently five months ago after a successful interim stint, Carrick now faces mounting pressure ahead of Sunday’s Old Trafford clash against Bournemouth.

The Red Devils are enduring their worst start of the Premier League era, alongside an early League Cup exit to Brighton and two losses in three Champions League fixtures.

During an impassioned press conference, Carrick took full accountability for the squad’s recent struggles.

“Recently we haven’t had a good time. I totally accept that. We had five months of relative success in a spell where I was happy with a lot of things we were doing as a team,” Carrick stated.

Addressing the fallout from their latest European setback, he added, “We haven’t done well enough lately. We’ve had a spell we’re really not happy with. Como was a bad night. It hurt me. It was really unacceptable. The supporters have to make the effort and spend the money to come and watch us. To have the feeling we all had after the game was a tough moment.”

Determined to spark a turnaround, Carrick pledged to restore the club’s identity and standards on the pitch.

“My job is to put a team on the pitch that represents the supporters and that they can be proud of the identity we show,” Carrick affirmed.

He concluded by addressing the tactical and mental drop in performance, noting, “We have gone away from that recently in certain games, which I am fully aware of and definitely doing something about.”
