Gumel Emir Dies After 46-Year Reign

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, has died at the age of 85 after a 46-year reign, the state government announced on Thursday.

The traditional ruler passed away on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Egypt, according to a statement by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim.

“With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the state government announces the passing away of the Emir of Gumel, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, at the age of 84,” Ibrahim said.

He described the late emir’s 46-year reign as remarkable, noting that it witnessed significant development in Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.

His death comes just four days after the passing of the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Bello Suleiman, who died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau.

The late monarch began his early education at Gumel Primary School (1948–1953) before proceeding to Hadejia Middle School (1953–1956). He completed his secondary education at Rumfa College (then Kano High School) in 1961.
