The U.S. war in Iran has cost $37.5 billion so far, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers on Tuesday as he pressed Congress to approve an urgent $90 billion supplemental funding request.

Defending the escalating conflict during a high-stakes hearing, Hegseth warned that the Pentagon will have to curtail military training and compromise long-term equipment maintenance unless lawmakers provide an immediate financial boost.

The sharp funding debate follows the collapse of a fragile ceasefire earlier this month, which triggered renewed daily airstrikes and raised U.S. casualties to 18 dead and roughly 430 injured.

While President Donald Trump has threatened to expand strikes to energy plants and deep-underground nuclear facilities, both Democratic and Republican lawmakers expressed deep frustration over the administration’s strategic ambiguity and rising costs ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
