The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has supported an alliance of opposition parties to compete against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
The party said its participation in the coalition, called the G-100, was driven by the need for opposition forces to work together to address the worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and other challenges facing Nigerians under the Bola Tinubu administration.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki-led interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong, the faction said it had formally endorsed the G-100 process of creating an “all-opposition front” ahead of the 2027 elections.
The statement followed the G-100 summit held in Abuja on Monday, where representatives of opposition parties began discussions on a framework for cooperation and coordination ahead of the elections.
The summit brought together representatives of six opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), PDP, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
According to the Turaki-led PDP faction, its decision was informed by the “wailings of Nigerians groaning under the repressive Bola Tinubu APC-led Federal Government” and the need for opposition parties to join forces in seeking the country’s “redemption.”
The party said its participation would, however, be guided by principles including transparency, equality, data-driven decision-making and egalitarianism.
Quoting Turaki, Ememobong said, “Our participation is anchored on the promise that the process will be hinged on the philosophical underpinnings of transparency, equality, data-driven decisions and egalitarianism.”
“Any result birthed by a process midwifed by these virtues will certainly offer Nigerians a credible leadership capable of alleviating the skyrocketing poverty and rising insecurity in the country,” he added.
Ememobong further described the faction’s participation in Monday’s meeting as further evidence of its readiness to help develop an opposition platform capable of taking power from the APC in 2027.
The G-100 initiative, convened by former APC chieftain Salihu Lukman, seeks greater cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. The group has argued that a fragmented opposition would struggle to defeat an incumbent with the organisational advantages of a ruling party.
At Monday’s summit, Lukman said the immediate objective was not to dissolve political parties or determine a presidential candidate, but to establish a framework for cooperation.
“We are not asking any political party to dissolve. Let us agree that we must build the table before negotiating the seats,” he said.
Representatives of the ADC, APM, NDC, PDP, PRP and SDP attended the summit.
However, some leading opposition presidential contenders, including ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, and APM presidential candidate Seyi Makinde, were absent.
