A group of pensioners protesting at the Lagos State Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday said Security personnel tear-gassed them after they had marched from the State House of Assembly to demand payment of their accrued rights.
According to News Central correspondent Omolola Ololade, who was at the scene, the pensioners, many of them elderly and with various ailments, had gathered to make their demands known peacefully.
“We’re presently at the Lagos State Governor’s office here in Alausa, Ikeja, you know, where these pensioners have all gathered to make their demands known for their delayed gratuities,” Ololade said.
She said the pensioners had marched from Ikeja to the Lagos State House of Assembly before security operatives initially prevented them from entering.
They had to forcefully make their way into the compound, Ololade said, before marching to the governor’s office.

One of the pensioners, a retired director, told News Central that the protest was about unpaid entitlements dating back to 2007.
“Well today a week ago, we actually embarked on a warning strike last Monday exactly to notify the government of our intention of letting them listen to our voice,” he said.
“Like I’m a retired director; I worked at the secretariat where we are now. I’m not getting up to 60,000 a month. How do I cope? I have children in the universities….What we are fighting for is our right. They are owing us some accrued interest dated since 2007. Please count it up to now. Accrued interest that could have buoyed up our remuneration, but we are still waiting for it, and that’s why we came.”
He said they had trekked from Ikeja to the governor’s office only to be tear-gassed but added, “We have recouped ourselves, and we are not going to back down. We are going to wait because this struggle is not about us alone. It’s not about us but our children.”
